From Farm to Lagoon: 2026 Farm City Luncheon Explores the Connection Between Agriculture and Water

Posted on October 6, 2026

PALM CITY, Fla. — Water connects all of Martin County, from the farms and ranchlands that support our agricultural economy to the rivers, wetlands and lagoon that define our community. This year’s Farm City Luncheon will explore that connection and the vital role agriculture, conservation and water management play in our region’s future.

On Thursday, November 19, One Martin and the Martin County Farm Bureau will host the 9th Annual Farm City Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Rockin’ H Ranch in Palm City. This year’s theme, “Rooted in Water: From Farm to Lagoon,” will guide a timely conversation about water quality and  land stewardship.

“Water touches nearly every part of life in Martin County, including our agriculture, environment and economy,” said Rick Hartman, President of One Martin. “Farm City gives us an opportunity to bring people together, learn from those working on these issues every day and better understand how agriculture and healthy natural resources can work hand in hand.”

This year’s featured speakers bring decades of experience in agriculture, water resource management and environmental stewardship:
  • Dr. Ronald W. Rice, County Extension Director and Extension Agent IV with UF/IFAS Extension Palm Beach County, has spent decades connecting agricultural producers, researchers, local government and the public. His work has included agricultural best management practices, water quality and community education, helping to strengthen understanding of agriculture’s role in South Florida. In 2025, Rice was named the Florida Farm Bureau Extension Professional of the Year.

  • Ernie Barnett, Executive Director of the Florida Land Council and Principal of Water and Land Advisors, Inc., has more than 35 years of experience in water resource management and public service. His career has included leadership in Everglades restoration and the development and implementation of major environmental and water resource initiatives throughout Florida. Barnett was named the 2026 recipient of Florida’s Agricultural-Environmental Leadership Award, recognizing his work supporting Florida agriculture and the protection of the state’s natural resources.

Together, Rice and Barnett will explore how decisions made across farms, working lands and watersheds affect Florida’s water resources - and how thoughtful stewardship can help protect them.

The Farm City Luncheon has become an annual Martin County tradition, bringing together farmers, ranchers, business and civic leaders and local residents to celebrate agriculture and learn about its role in the community. Guests will also enjoy a locally inspired meal and opportunities to connect with agricultural leaders and community partners.
