I think your editorial (“Our View: Instead of banning disposal plastic bags, Florida — and Floridians — should learn to use this resource responsibly,” Jan. 6), really missed the mark in reminding your readers about the best alternatives to plastic and paper bags: reusable tote bags and, when possible, no bags at all.
Whether made from recycled materials, organic cotton or some other substance, the important thing is for all of us to get in the habit of taking our reusable tote bags with us wherever we go. And, just as important, for smaller items such as quick purchases at the convenience or drug stores, the best choice is to decline all bags and carry out your items.
It’s all about changing our behavioral patterns. If people changed their routines ever so slightly by making this small change, by the time the “bag tax” took effect, it would impact very few people.
