The days just got a little brighter for more than 90 preschoolers thanks to a community improvement project at the Gertrude Walden Child Care Center that was coordinated by Keep Martin Beautiful and organized by Steve Hooks of Hooks Construction. The center received a multitude of renovations, including a fresh coat of bright blue paint for the outside of the building, paling only in comparison to the brilliant smiles of the children inside. Over 250 volunteers donated materials, time and poured their sweat equity into making much needed renovations to the center.
During an appreciation event held on June 19, Gertrude Walden Child Care Center Executive Director Thelma Washington expressed her thanks to those who made it happen. "It means so much in these economic times to not have to worry about how we would fix the chipped paint, rotten wood, and replace the entry door with zero funding," Washington said. "Thanks to Steve Hooks and Frank Neff with Habitat Angels and all of the volunteers, everything we needed to have done is done."
The project was one of four community improvement projects organized by Keep Martin Beautiful (KMB) as part of the Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest annual community improvement program. Coordinated locally each year from March through May by KMB, this year's theme was the "Extreme Martin Makeover."
"We wanted to expand on Keep Martin Beautiful's mission and organize volunteers for key beautification and revitalization efforts in areas most in need," explained Rhonda Irons, KMB President. "Community volunteers, local non-profits and area businesses stepped up to help complete special projects at: the Gertrude Walden Child Care Center in East Stuart; the Rio/Jensen Beach Skate Park; the Palm City Boys & Girls Clubs; and a historic home in Golden Gate."
Steve Hooks, President of Hooks Construction spearheaded efforts, including roof repairs, painting, landscaping and improvements to the playground area. "I grew up in Martin County and used to play basketball with my friends in East Stuart, so doing this project for the children in this area was a great way to give back," Hooks said.
Hooks was presented with a plaque and gift from Washington on behalf of the students at the center in appreciation for his hard work and dedication. "We experienced the magic of being citizens of Martin County. It was truly a magical transformation," Washington said.
