Nearly 1,200 volunteers removed tons of debris and planted almost a thousand trees between March 1 and May 31 at local parks, beaches and roadways to support Keep Martin Beautiful's 2008 Great American Cleanup.

Keep Martin Beautiful is the local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful.

The highlight of Martin County's marathon beautification effort was the debut of Cleanupalooza on May 3 where an army of 750 volunteers devoted the morning to litter removal and revitalization projects throughout the community.

Their labor was rewarded with a volunteer appreciation lunch and environmental expo at the Martin County Fairgrounds.

"This was a better turnout than we ever anticipated for our first Cleanupalooza," said Pat Yancey, the Great American Cleanup chair. "It's another example of how everyone in our community pulls together to make a positive difference in the community."

Keep Martin Beautiful's inaugural event was honored by the national affiliate with $5,000 and a community improvement award.

It also left its mark on the Martin County Fairgrounds. Cocoa plum and mulley grass were planted along the midway. Local artist Brenda Lee is transforming the drab exterior of one building into a vibrant mural.
